This is part of my opening speech on the first day of school. I always say, "Education is the best line of defense against all adversity". I explain to my students that without education they can be easily manipulated by anyone with a sophisticated tongue. I give the example mass media example. The mass media preys on the uneducated and the insecure. Watching infomercials at night will convince you that you all sorts of problems just to make a buck. A persons body will actually start to experience symptoms if the mind believes it enough. Education is key! Education is powerful!
Right? Like we really need all that stuff, but boy when we're watching, suddenly we feel like we need it. Excellent post, and I agree, teach students to educate themselves, and "follow the money" to find many of the real reasons people are telling you things.
